The McDonald Group diversifies with acquisition of SWL

In September 2015, the McDonald Group acquired SWL International Ltd. Invergordon-based SWL was founded in 1994 to supply, hire and repair lifting equipment for major industry. The company now offers an extensive range of services aimed at putting safety first.

“We were keen to diversify in the current market,” explained Mike McDonald, Managing Director of the McDonald Group. “SWL seemed like the ideal choice for us – it’s a strong little company located close by us, and the owner is retiring. It’s also a good fit in terms of service – we can certainly use some of their services, for example testing our own safety equipment and using their online management system, WEBCERT. It’s very cost-effective for us to bring these things in-house.

“SWL also shares our strong commitment to health and safety,” Mike added. “We’re both family-run companies, and we have similar values of excellent customer care and flexibility. I’m very happy to welcome everyone at SWL to the McDonald Group.”

SWL Sales and Marketing Manager David Wilson shares Mike’s enthusiasm for the buyout. “We’re very happy to be joining the McDonald Group. We’re close in location, services, clients and ethos, so we complement each other well. I’m confident that both companies will benefit from the buyout, and we’re looking forward to working together to get even stronger – and to be able to provide an even better service for our clients.”

SWL has an extensive client base incorporating all the major industry sectors, including oil and gas, renewable energy, civil engineering, manufacturing and fabrication, and the food industry. It has built excellent relationships with many long-term clients and partners. Clients include the Highland Council, Global Energy Group, Orkney Ferries, Baxters, Siemens, Heavy Crane Contractors, SSE and the FCBC consortium building the new Forth Road Bridge.

Further expansion into Elgin

More changes are underway for McDonald Scaffolding with a new branch opening in Elgin. We’re doing a lot of work in the Moray area, particularly in the house-building industry, and having a yard there will be helpful to both our clients and us.
“We’ll be able to service the thriving Moray market much more easily and be able to be more responsive,” said Mike. “We’re looking forward to strengthening our relationships in the area.”
